Blue and White Swirl Cake

So here it is....my first real cake decorating video and post! I made chocolate cake, filled with chocolate icing, and covered in blue and white flowers and stars. This cake looks a little hard to make, but in reality is very easy ! To start out, I baked two nine inch chocolate cakes, let them cool, and leveled them using my cake leveler. Then I filled and stacked them. I used store bought icing to fill the cake. More info on that below. I finally crumb coated them and put them in the freezer to chill for 15 minutes. For this cake, I made some American buttercream, and dyed half of it blue. I used some blue food coloring I had on hand, and probably put about 5-6 drops of in in my buttercream. I was worried I would not have enough buttercream to pipe on the outside of my cake if I were to fill it with my buttercream. So instead of filling my cake with the buttercream, I used a can of chocolate store bought icing I had in the pantry. So I filled and crumb coated my cakes wi...

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Today we are going to be making the classic chocolate chip cookie! Two things I always recommend before starting a recipe are measuring out all of the ingredients, and preheating your oven. Measuring out your ingredients makes it easier to make your recipe, and since the ingredients are pre-measured, you are not scrambling around measuring your ingredients while making a recipe. Preheating the oven is a good thing to do because baking is a science. Most recipes need to be baked immediately so that the right chemical reactions can happen. For instance, pancakes need to be cooked immediately. Cakes as well, should usually be baked immediately. So always make sure to preheat your oven beforehand. Another thing (which I really need to do as well) is taking out your butter making the dough a little before you make the cookies. I always forget, so I usually end up softening the butter in the microwave for 10-15 seconds or so. Find the video of me making these cookies bel...

Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats

If you thought that normal rice krispie treats were good, than chocolate are even better! All you need is some marshmallows, a little bit of butter, and of course, chocolate rice krispie cereal. The specific ingredients are: - 6 cups Chocolate Rice Krispie Cereal (and if you just want to make regular, use the original kind) - 3 tbsp. butter - 4 cups miniature marshmallows To start out, you'll want to microwave your marshmallows in the microwave. You really want to do this in 30 second intervals and give a little stir in between. One of the reasons why I do this is because the marshmallows may not look melted, but once you give them that stir, you'll see that they really are. Once your marshmallows come out of the microwave, give them another stir and then add them to your cereal immediately. I had to transfer my marshmallow to a larger bowl, because I didn't have enough room in the bowl I melted them in. Stir the mixture all together. For me, I had to add ...

Chocolate Donuts

With the two doughnut pans I received for Christmas for a relative, I made chocolate donuts using this recipe  here . The ingredients are flour, cocoa, baking soda, salt, melted butter, eggs, white sugar, brown sugar, buttermilk, or regular milk mixed with vinegar. The recipe she gives only makes about 6 doughnuts, so I had to double my recipe. First, preheat your oven to 350. Grease your doughnut pans. In a small bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, cocoa, and salt. In a larger bowl, mix together the wet ingredients. Then, mix the wet and dry together. Then fill your pans with the batter. I tried using the piping bag technique, but I didn't use a piping tip and I cut the hole too big, so that didn't turn out well that time. But, if you don't cut your hole too big, the piping bag technique is probably the easiest to do. Bake them in the oven for 8-10 minutes.Let them cool in the pans for 2-3 minutes, then try to take them out. You want...

Triple Chip Cookies

Today I made triple chip cookies - white chocolate, dark chocolate and milk chocolate chips. First, preheat your oven to 375 F. The list of ingredients are: 2 1/4 cup flour 1 tsp. Baking soda 1 tsp. salt 1 cup softened butter 3/4 cup white sugar 3/4 cup Brown sugar 1 tsp. vanilla extract 2 large eggs 1 3/4 cup chocolate chips (or whole 11.5 oz. bag) In a small bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda and salt. In a larger bowl cream the butter, the two sugars, and the vanilla extract  together. Add the eggs, the stir the flour mixture in and add the chocolate chips. The dough gets slightly thick, do you may have to use your hands to finish mixing the dough. Form the cookie dough into small to medium sized balls. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 10-15 minutes depending on your oven. Place onto a cooling rack to set and cool. Let them cool for 5 minutes or so. Then, enjoy! - The Junior Baker

Winter Cupcakes

Happy New Year! I made some chocolate cupcakes and used a snowflake topper and winter sprinkles I got at Michaels. I used Duncan Hines chocolate cake mix and used Duncan Hines whipped vanilla icing and whipped chocolate icing.  So first, follow the instructions on the back of the cake box. I added another egg and used milk instead of water to make the cupcakes richer and denser. Bake it in the oven according to the back of the box. I used one box, which typically makes 24 cupcakes. To decorate the cupcakes you will need a can of Duncan Hines whipped chocolate icing, a can of Duncan Hines whipped vanilla icing, 1-2 piping bags, a large star decorating tip, snowflake treat toppers, and Wilton's winter sprinkle mix. You will also need a large circle cake board ( I think I used either a 10 inch or a 12 inch) and a wine glass for the display I used. First, using the large star tip, fill a piping bag with white icing. The reason why I said you ...

St. Nicholas Day Cupcakes

I know these cupcakes don't look much like Christmas cupcakes, but they were good! I used Duncan Hines Devil's Food chocolate cake mix. Preheat your oven to 350. Then mix 3 eggs a cup of milk or water and 1/3 cup of vegetable oil. Then mix it together. These are some cool shots my brother took of it mixing. Then scoop the batter into your muffin tins. The box says it will make 24 cupcakes, but I usually end up with only 18 or so. Bake them for 20-22 minutes. Cupcakes cool fast so let them sit out for 5-10 minutes, or put them in the freezer for 2-3 minutes. To ice them, I used Betty Crocker's Cupcake Icing. I used the same kind I used here  . I played around with the tips and iced them using the chocolate flavor and the pink colored kind. I sprinkled red sprinkles on them too. These could also be used as Valentines Day cupcakes too!! More Christmas posts coming soon! ...
