Blue and White Swirl Cake

So here it is....my first real cake decorating video and post! I made chocolate cake, filled with chocolate icing, and covered in blue and white flowers and stars.

This cake looks a little hard to make, but in reality is very easy ! To start out, I baked two nine inch chocolate cakes, let them cool, and leveled them using my cake leveler. Then I filled and stacked them. I used store bought icing to fill the cake. More info on that below. I finally crumb coated them and put them in the freezer to chill for 15 minutes.

For this cake, I made some American buttercream, and dyed half of it blue. I used some blue food coloring I had on hand, and probably put about 5-6 drops of in in my buttercream. I was worried I would not have enough buttercream to pipe on the outside of my cake if I were to fill it with my buttercream. So instead of filling my cake with the buttercream, I used a can of chocolate store bought icing I had in the pantry. So I filled and crumb coated my cakes with that. The top of the cake was not very crumby, so the top of the cake is actually just the crumb coat! However, if your cake is crumby, you will have to ice the top of your cake again before you pipe, or pipe flowers on the top of the cake as well.

For the flowers and stars, I used Wilton's #32 star tip. As you will see in the video, I swirled the icing and and filled in the gaps with stars.

Before I piped out the swirls, I took a wooden dowel I had and marked lines on the side of the cake diagonally. I  piped my swirls inside of these lines, so the stripes would be even.

The two colored icing looks so great! This would also look really good in pink and white, blue and gold, red and white, and other colors!

Blue and White Swirl Cake:

1. Bake two 9-inch round chocolate cakes. Allow them to cool, then remove them from their pans.
2. Make one portion of American buttercream. To make the buttercream, you will need 1 cup (227g) butter, softened, 4 cups (512g) powdered sugar, 4 tbsp. milk, and 1 tsp. vanilla. Whip the butter, then slowly add your powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla. Whip for a few more minutes. Dye half of the buttercream blue and leave the other half white.
3.  Fill your cakes with your buttercream (make a little more), or icing of your choice. Then crumb coat your cakes.
4. Once the cake is chilled, use a ruler or dowel to mark diagonal lines on your cake.
5. Fill two piping bags with Wilton tip #32. One bag with blue, the other with white.
6. Pipe stars and swirls inside the diagonal lines, alternating between blue and white. Pipe some stars  on top of your cake.

Enjoy!!

Chocolate Donuts

With the two doughnut pans I received for Christmas for a relative, I made chocolate donuts using this recipe  here . The ingredients are flour, cocoa, baking soda, salt, melted butter, eggs, white sugar, brown sugar, buttermilk, or regular milk mixed with vinegar. The recipe she gives only makes about 6 doughnuts, so I had to double my recipe. First, preheat your oven to 350. Grease your doughnut pans. In a small bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, cocoa, and salt. In a larger bowl, mix together the wet ingredients. Then, mix the wet and dry together. Then fill your pans with the batter. I tried using the piping bag technique, but I didn't use a piping tip and I cut the hole too big, so that didn't turn out well that time. But, if you don't cut your hole too big, the piping bag technique is probably the easiest to do. Bake them in the oven for 8-10 minutes.Let them cool in the pans for 2-3 minutes, then try to take them out. You want...

Triple Chip Cookies

Today I made triple chip cookies - white chocolate, dark chocolate and milk chocolate chips. First, preheat your oven to 375 F. The list of ingredients are: 2 1/4 cup flour 1 tsp. Baking soda 1 tsp. salt 1 cup softened butter 3/4 cup white sugar 3/4 cup Brown sugar 1 tsp. vanilla extract 2 large eggs 1 3/4 cup chocolate chips (or whole 11.5 oz. bag) In a small bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda and salt. In a larger bowl cream the butter, the two sugars, and the vanilla extract  together. Add the eggs, the stir the flour mixture in and add the chocolate chips. The dough gets slightly thick, do you may have to use your hands to finish mixing the dough. Form the cookie dough into small to medium sized balls. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 10-15 minutes depending on your oven. Place onto a cooling rack to set and cool. Let them cool for 5 minutes or so. Then, enjoy! - The Junior Baker

Tank Cake

My brother requested a tank cake for his birthday, and this one is super easy to make! To start out, I used 2 boxes of cake mix. One of them was Duncan Hines butter golden, and the other was Dark chocolate fudge. I mixed up the boxes in separate bowls, and I dyed the butter golden cake green, and I added black food coloring to the chocolate to make it black. Then I poured my cake batter into a 13x9 inch cake pan, and a 8x8 inch cake pan. I alternated chocolate, yellow, chocolate, yellow, etc.. then marbled it together to make a sort of camouflage pattern. I baked the cakes in the other according to the back of the cake box, but I had to add a little more time, so I think I ended up cooking them for about 45 minutes. Once they were cooled and out of their pans, I prepared my cake board using a cookie sheet lined with tin foil. I would of used a normal cake board, but I didn't have any. Meanwhile, I took my icing, and dyed it green. To get the shade I wanted, ...
